My great-grandfather was among thousands that committed suicide during the Great Depression. Puerto Rico felt the worst of this with 26% unemployment on the island by 1935. A fabric salesman crushed by poverty, he took his own life leaving a wife and two children. Though the PRRA brought relief in the same year, independence was a fading dream. The industrial boom would bring jobs and temporary relief to the island, but small farms and businesses couldn't recover under U.S. corporate rule.
